Fuzhou Jasmine Tea and Craft Workshop
A half-day immersion into Fuzhou’s UNESCO-listed jasmine tea tradition and its companion craft arts: bodiless lacquerware and Shoushan stone carving.
Fuzhou produces over 90% of China’s scented jasmine tea using a centuries-old technique that was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2022. This half-day experience connects that craft tradition to the city’s other signature art forms — bodiless lacquerware and Shoushan stone carving — through visits to working studios rather than museum displays.
The tea segment focuses on the scenting process itself: how fresh jasmine blossoms are layered with tea leaves through multiple rounds of absorption to build fragrance without added flavoring. When available, a master artisan demonstrates the hand-scenting technique that distinguishes Fuzhou’s production from industrial methods.
